Home > Interviews > Becoming an Auto Locksmith – Paul Horton’s Automotive Locksmithing Journey
Stepping into the world of being an auto locksmith has opened up exciting opportunities for locksmiths eager to expand their skill set and embrace fresh challenges. For MLA Approved Company Director, QML member and Board Member Paul Horton, this journey has brought not only professional growth but also a renewed enthusiasm for his work.
Here we find out more about Paul’s journey
Transitioning into automotive locksmithing came with its fair share of adjustments, but Paul has turned these challenges into stepping stones. Balancing the new automotive work with his existing services required a period of adaptation, but the results have been worth the effort. The rising demand for automotive expertise has not only boosted his revenue but also made his business more efficient. “It’s satisfying to know that the knowledge you’ve worked hard to gain makes such a meaningful difference to your customers,” Paul reflects.
“It’s definitely not without its hurdles, but overcoming them has been incredibly rewarding.”
For me, the real highlight of my journey has been the ability to make a tangible difference for my clients. Whether it’s helping a driver regain access to their vehicle in a remote location or streamlining solutions for fleet operators, the results speak for themselves.
There’s a sense of pride in solving problems that feel overwhelming for someone else. When a customer is panicked, and you can turn that around with your expertise, it’s a fantastic feeling. The gratitude he receives from his customers has been a constant reminder of why this transition was a great choice.
Paul is one of over 170 Auto locksmiths across the UK approved by the UK’s largest locksmith association, offering services from car key cutting, lost car keys to car lock opening.

I have to admit I’ve had a positive experience with MLA Affiliate 3D Group, and the support from the MLA partner network has been instrumental in my journey. The interaction I have had up until now has been great, which is one of the reasons why I currently use them as my main supplier.
I find 3D Groups website great; while I’m out on the road, it’s a lifeline because it provides information whenever I need it.
One memorable moment involved a Nissan Juke job on a rainy afternoon. I needed the key code because I was trying to pick up the door lock, but it was a nightmare. I went back to my van, soaking wet, and thought, ‘Should I just try to buy the key code, and will I get it in time before you shut?’.
After receiving the confirmation text, I jokingly replied, mentioning the rain and hoping for quick service. A few minutes later, the code was sent to me. I cut the key and opened the car. That’s where the 3D Group website really came into its own—it’s a lifeline on the road.”

Automotive locksmithing is quickly becoming a cornerstone of my business, and I’m excited for what the future holds. I’m already planning to create a dedicated unit for vehicle-related services, such is my commitment to this thriving area.
If locksmiths considering a similar move into auto were to ask me for advice I’d say take the leap, but do it wisely. Invest in learning, build your confidence, and enjoy the journey. It’s incredibly fulfilling, and the potential to grow is enormous. The best part is seeing how far you’ve come and realising how much more you can achieve.
