Why Did You Attend the Apprenticeship?

I first thought about undergoing the MLA’s Apprenticeship programme as my manager was looking for me to undertake formal training. This was with the view for me to run the business when he was out of the office. What also reinforced my decision was that many of my friends had good experiences of Apprenticeship schemes within the Plumbing sector and recommended it as a good route for a hands-on sort of person, like myself!

Was the Course Content Easy To Pick Up?

I really enjoyed the course and found the course content easy to pick up. It was a lot less daunting than I first expected, as the environment was very relaxed and didn’t feel like a classroom environment – especially the fact that we got to have a laugh with the tutors occasionally. What’s more, the tutors seem to very knowledgeable.

What was interesting – is despite spending nearly 3 years within the industry – the formal training clarified a lot of info that I hadn’t picked up in the locksmithing trade and now I feel a lot more confident on jobs!

How Did the Tutors Help?

Personally, what helped me a lot was that the tutors had the ability to tailor the training around to my learning style; enabling me to pick up the course content more effectively. Added to that, we didn’t have to use textbooks, it was all on the job experience; something that I found particularly valuable.

Would You Recommend the Course?

I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend the course to anyone; in fact I’m always recommending the course to my family. What I found really useful was the ongoing support/mentoring from the tutors and Steffan (MLA’s Group CEO). It wasn’t a case of – finishing the course and that’s it! – any questions about different jobs, they’re all happy to help along the way!

I’m very pleased with the introduction of the Apprenticeship scheme to our organisation. I wanted to implement the scheme with the view to the student (aka, my son!) to run the business when I’m away and eventually to take over when I retire.

I would definitely look to recruit another Apprentice

He’s been a great asset to the business. Not only has his knowledge of the products improved, but this in turn has improved his customer service, resulting in greatly developing our sales revenue. Conor can now up-sell where appropriate or even recommend the most useful products to customers; increasing consumer confidence within our organisation.

I would definitely look to recruit another Apprentice – as not only has it improved their personal development – but I can also see a tangible improvement in our bottom line!

Why Did You Attend The Apprenticeship?

When I finished school I was really undecided about my career choices. I initially applied for some college courses in Sports Science, but on the face of it, I didn’t like the idea of a classroom environment – I see myself as more of a practical person!

Meanwhile, my Step Dad runs a successful locksmithing business and suggested the idea of training to become a locksmith through his company. He also wanted me to be in a position to run the shop when he’s away and when he looks to retire in the future.

I would definitely recommend the course as I think it’s ideal if you’re starting from scratch and want to learn the basics of locksmithing in an easily digestible format!

With this in mind, I thought the best way of training in the industry was to embark on an Apprenticeship scheme, together with the backing of a well-established Association.

What Was Your Favorite Part Of The Course?

The best element to the programme was that it suited my learning style. It was very hands-on/practical and meant it was easy to follow. What’s more, I learnt loads and felt after the week I’m more than ready to become a locksmith; despite having no prior knowledge of the industry.

On the whole, the course seems to represent great value as I learnt a lot of valuable info on the industry and indeed becoming a locksmith – what’s more, even the tutor Simon and Nick from ‘Skills For Security’ come down to the shop occasionally to see how I’m getting on and to answer any queries I’ve had along the way!

I would definitely recommend the course as I think it’s ideal if you’re starting from scratch and want to learn the basics of locksmithing in an easily digestible format!

I initially left school at 16 as education wasn’t for me. I’d applied for Sixth Form and College courses, but as an outdoors person I wanted to try something different – although, at this stage, had no idea what that something different would be!

Why the Apprenticeship/MLA route?

My dad recommended a Customer Service Apprenticeship at his work. After getting a bit of a flavour for the locksmithing industry, I realised that this was for me and wanted to gain some formal training. What’s more, the company was looking to setup another shop and needed someone to cover the new branch. He then recommended that I venture onto another Apprenticeship, cementing my skills as a locksmith via one of the MLA’s beginner’s programmes. After seeing my Dad doing the role, I wanted to follow in his footsteps. I then enrolled onto the course, as one thing I did know, is that I wanted the MLA on my CV; as I understand them to be the most respected association within the industry.

I think it’s 100% good value and would definitely recommend the Apprenticeship programme as it’s packed full of knowledge

How Did You Find The Course?

I really enjoyed the course and what I didn’t expect is just how informal the whole course environment is! The tutors were really knowledgeable and I even had a good laugh with them! In fact, the whole group dynamics were great as even my fellow classmates seemed passionate about the course! Another thing I didn’t consider before enrolling was the networking opportunities. I made quite a few friends on the course, of which most I still keep in touch with!

Future Career Plans?

Apart from helping to run the shop and attending call-outs in the van, my other grand ambition is to setup a shop of my very own!

Would You Recommend the Scheme/MLA?

On the whole, I think it’s 100% good value and would definitely recommend the Apprenticeship programme as it’s packed full of knowledge and I even got to stay in hotel; something that I haven’t had much of an opportunity to do before!
